SAN DIEGO — A vigil and funeral Mass are scheduled next week for Bishop Cirilo Flores, who died Saturday, and a diocesan administrator was elected Tuesday, the Diocese of San Diego said.
Monsignor Steven Callahan was unanimously elected as administrator by the six members of the College of Consultors, the diocese said in a statement.
Callahan has been vicar general of the diocese since January 2003.
Flores, who was appointed bishop last September, died at Nazareth House in San Diego after a battle with prostate cancer. He was 66.
He was the spiritual leader for the nearly 1 million Catholics living in San Diego and Imperial counties.
As administrator, Callahan will assume governance of the diocese until a new bishop is appointed by the Holy See, the papal bureaucracy in Rome.
A visitation and vigil for Flores will be held Tuesday at St. Joseph Cathedral at 1535 Third Ave. in San Diego.
The body will be received at 10 a.m., with visitation from 10:15 a.m. until 6:45 p.m.
A vigil will be held at the cathedral at 7 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be said at noon Sept. 17 at Saint Thérèse of Carmel in San Diego at 4355 Del Mar Trails Road. Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery at 4470 Hilltop Drive, San Diego.
