Timeline

2005: The agreement-in-principle is signed between the federal government, survivors and church organizations.

Sept. 19, 2007: The Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement is formally signed and enacted. The agreement will lead to the creation of two separate bodies: the Independent Assessment Process, responsible for administering claims, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

June 1, 2008: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission formally launches, and begins its mission of research and statement-gathering.

June 11, 2008: Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other party leaders deliver a formal apology in the House of Commons.

June 16-19, 2010: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission holds the first of its seven national events.

Feb. 24, 2012: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission releases its interim report. Under the heading “Lack of Cooperation,” it lambastes the federal government for failing to disclose documents. “It is unlikely that the document-collection process will be completed without a significant shift in attitude on the part of Canada and those parties who have been reluctant to cooperate.”

Jan. 30, 2013: Justice Stephen Goudge rules that Canada must disclose its records to the commission in a useful archival format.

June 21, 2013: The University of Manitoba signs an agreement to host the National Research Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, one part of the lasting legacy of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Jan. 14, 2014: Justice Paul Perell of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice rules that Canada and the Ontario Provincial Police must disclose investigative records related to St. Anne’s residential school, where staff received criminal convictions for inflicting abuse on students.

Feb. 3, 2014: The University of Manitoba announces Ry Moran as the executive director of the research centre.

March 27-30, 2014: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission holds its final national event in Edmonton.

Aug. 7, 2014: Justice Perell issues a direction that transcripts and recordings of testimony given and independent assessment process hearings should be destroyed after a 15-year holding period and notice program.

June 2015: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission is scheduled to release its final report and dissolve, passing all its records to the National Research Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.
