Rabbi Eliezer Berland, a leader of the Breslov Hassidic
community wanted in Israel on suspicion of sexual molestation,
was questioned on Tuesday by police in Zimbabwe where he
currently resides. Berland, who heads the Shuvu
Banim Breslov community in Jerusalem’s Mea She’arim
neighborhood, fled Israel some 18 months ago after being accused
of sexual abuse.
After several stops,
he took up residence in Morocco but was expelled after a seven
month stay by King
Mohammed VI in light of the accusations against him, after
which he sought refuge in Zimbabwe with a group of his
followers.
The Hebrew daily Ma’ariv reported that
Berland was brought in for questioning by Zimbabwe’s
immigration authorities on Tuesday morning and was released a
short time after. The rabbi recently hired
attorneys in Israel due to the possibility that he might be
forced to return.
