The Most Rev Malcolm McMahon has been named as the new Archbishop of Liverpool.

The 64-year-old, from London, is the current Bishop of Nottingham.

He said he was "honoured and humbled" to be appointed to the position and will be the city's ninth Archbishop.

The new Archbishop of Liverpool today paid tribute to the "dignity" of the Hillsborough families and said he would be supporting them in their continuing campaign for justice.

Bishop McMahon, who was ordained as a priest in 1982, went to Oxford University and has had parishes in London and Newcastle.

He has been the Bishop of Nottingham since 2000.

Archbishop-elect McMahon said: "I'm honoured and humbled to have been appointed by our Holy Father Pope Francis as Archbishop of Liverpool and I promise to do my best to repay the trust that he has placed in me."

He thanked his predecessor Archbishop Emeritus Patrick Kelly for "many years of service" and Bishop Tom Williams, who has been looking after the Archdiocese since Archbishop Kelly's retirement.

He will be formally installed in Liverpool on May 1.

Archbishop Emeritus Patrick Kelly retired last year after 17 years in the role. He was present today to welcome his successor when he was official unveiled as his replacement at Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral.

The Archbishop-elect went on to lead Mass after the announcement.

Bishop McMahon said he would be sad to leave the banks of the Trent but his was looking forward to "living my Christian vocation on the banks of the Mersey".

His appointment to the position was welcomed by Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson and the acting Anglican Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Revd Richard Blackburn.

Bishop Richard said “I warmly welcome Archbishop Elect Rt Revd Malcolm McMahon to Liverpool and look forward to working alongside him.

"He will be in my prayers as he makes the move to Liverpool.

"A very significant burden of responsibility has fallen upon my good friend Bishop Tom (Williams, apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Liverpool), as he has led the Archdiocese during this past year, and I am grateful for the time he has continued to give to me despite his busy schedule.

"I greatly value this personal partnership which derives from the strong respectful relationship with our brothers and sisters in the Catholic Archdiocese. I am sure this will continue as we seek to make Christ known in the city and region."
