A former residential care home in Derry run by
the Sisters of Nazareth for more than 100 years is for sale.
Nazareth House, at Bishop Street - which closed last
year - is now on the property market with a guide selling price
of in the region of £750,000.
The property that’s currently for sale includes the
former nursing home, as well as a chapel and a three-bedroom
bungalow.
The site extends to some 1.65 acres and because of its
elevated location boasts commanding views of the River Foyle and
the east bank.
Property experts say it represents an “excellent
opportunity” and could, perhaps, be used for “healthcare,
educational or institutional use” or, alternatively, could be
re-developed.
The sale brochure says the existing buildings may be
suitable for conversion to apartments or other residential
development.
There is access to the site from both Bishop Street and
Foyle Park which allows for possible sub-division of the site.
The property comprises the original building, which
dates from the early 19th century, along with two more modern
wings built in the early 1960s.
The property was historically used as a care home for
both children and the elderly and was run by the Sisters of
Nazareth. It was operational up until September 2013.
The original building consists of a four storey stone
and red brick structure. It accommodates a number of
administrative offices, reception rooms and a dining hall with
the upper floors generally containing the residential
accommodation.
Flanking the original buildings are a single storey
chapel and a three storey bedroom block.
Extensive landscaped grounds are located to the rear of
the property and could present further development opportunity.
There is a three-bedroom bungalow located at the
southern end of the site with separate access to Foyle Road.
