Good morning, St. Cloud area.
Mark your calendars for 1 p.m. Monday to view the Times Editorial Board’s discussion with St. Cloud Bishop Donald Kettler and St. John’s Abbot John Klassen about the clergy sex abuse scandal and how the Catholic Church can move forward.
Board members spent time Wednesday discussing possible questions to ask two of the leaders of the Catholic Church in Central Minnesota. There are plenty of things the board wants to understand about how the clergy abuse issue was handled and what steps are being taken to prevent future abuse.
You can watch the session live on www.sctimes.com. We also plan to provide a news report of highlights from the session.
Thanks to the readers who answered my suggestion in a previous column and sent along their questions for consideration.
Congratulations to our staffer of the year
Sports reporter Mick Hatten is the winner of the 2013 Harold Schoelkopf Award as news staffer of the year.
Hatten was honored for his coverage of the St. Cloud State University men’s hockey team. He live blogs Huskies men’s games, writes feature stories and keeps readers updated on the latest news surrounding the program.
During the team’s amazing 2012-13 season, he helped create the Times’ first single folio app for iPads and an e-book recapping the season, which included a trip to the Frozen Four. Readers can get information on accessing those digital publications at www.sctimes.com/hockeyapp.
Hatten also wrote for the special section published on the expansion of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center and a preview of the men’s and women’s teams for the 2013-14 season.
There were four runners-up for the award: reporter Ben Katzner, Metro Editor Lisa Schwarz, Opinion Page Editor Randy Krebs and copy editor Mitch LeClair.
Congratulations to the winners. The award is named after the late Harold Schoelkopf, who was editor of the Times for more than 50 years. He also was very active in community service.
Thanks, plow drivers
Business travel has taken me out on Minnesota and Iowa highways in our recent miserable winter weather, including drives in snow, fog and freezing rain.
I’m a cautious, white-knuckle driver in winter weather. I’m also a grateful driver to the people who drive the snowplows with sanding, salting or other attachments. When I see the orange snowplow trucks, it tells me that the roads are in bad shape but they are doing their best
to keep me out of the ditches.
I’m sure those public employees take some criticism and have to put up with loads of careless drivers. But I want to take this space to say thank you to the plow drivers. Roll on, please.
