Cardinal De Paolis celebrates Legionaries’ General Chapter Opening Mass
The opening Mass for the extraordinary general chapter of the Legionaries of Christ was held at 6:30 this afternoon in the chapel of the Legion’s Center of Higher Studies, located in Rome. Cardinal Velasio De Paolis presided the Mass and delivered the homily, which can be found here. 60 of the chapter fathers concelebrated, along with many other Legionary priests.
The Mass comes at the end of a novena to the Holy Spirit that all Legionaries participated in and an 8 day silent retreat in which the chapter fathers sought light and guidance from God for this important step in the life of the Legion and Regnum Christi.
Tomorrow, January 9th, the formal discussions begin. The two specific tasks of the general chapter are to approve the draft of the Legion’s constitutions and to elect a new government for the Legion.
In his homily, Cardinal De Paolis addressed each of these tasks.
Regarding the approval of the constitutions, he said: “The constitutions that you give yourselves will therefore not be simply a code of laws that unites you only externally in discipline, but the text will be an expression of a common vocation, a common ideal, a common mission, a common path to healing, an impulse to strive in common striving for the fulfillment of God’s plan for the congregation and for each of you, for the glory of God and service to the Church and to the Legion. The heart of the constitutions is the charism, or spiritual patrimony, of the Institute. The Pope, although he showed us that the main purpose of the journey undertaken and the Chapter should be the review and approval of the constitutions, also stressed that in such a work, the very charism of the Institute should be examined in depth. In fact, the constitutions must contain the vocation and identity of the Institute (that is, its charism or spiritual patrimony) and the fundamental norms for its protection, advancement and progress. This has been the concern in drafting the text, and the Chapter should have the same concern when approving the new text to be submitted to the Holy Father.”
Regarding the election of the new superiors, the Cardinal said: “The primary task, in fact, of the superiors is to preserve and promote the Institute’s charism; the charism is only guaranteed when authority is exercised as service, in the spirit of the Gospel and in fidelity to the norms of the Church. It is a point which should always be given special attention, especially for you, who have a history of suffering in this regard. It is important not to forget that. And this has been a topic about which the new constitutional text has been careful and vigilant. However, as you know, well-made laws are important, but not enough, if there is not a new spirit. And it is this new spirit that you are called to foster and cultivate inside of you when you are called upon to give yourselves new superiors. You really have to have a new heart, both on the part of those electing and those elected.”
Afterwards, the Cardinal invited the Legionaries of Christ to look to the future trusting in the guidance of God and the Church: “The same Lord who has accomplished this work in you is the guarantor who will accompany you even further along the path you are called to follow. What the Lord has done during this time of preparation is like the memory to which you are called to return, so as to regain confidence, serenity and hope: hope in the Lord who has preserved your vocation; hope in the Legion, which, thanks to you, presents itself to this chapter with new strength and new horizons; and hope in the Church, which has accompanied you, particularly through Pope Benedict XVI—who, in the most tragic moment in your history, has had confidence in you and has believed in your capacity for renewal and faithfulness to the Lord—and in the current Supreme Pontiff Pope Francis—who wanted to be present at this important moment in your history.

We are celebrating this Mass of the Holy Spirit for the opening of the Extraordinary General Chapter, for which we have been preparing for about three and a half years, with a precise mandate from the Holy Father Benedict XVI. It is an event of faith, which we can celebrate only under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It comes about at the end of a long journey, whose path was marked out for us by the Holy Father; therefore it can only be understood in the light of the journey already made. These two events are closely connected. The preparation’s goal was the Chapter, together with the specific commitments it entails; namely, the appointment of the new government of the congregation, and the approval of the constitutions, which, with the efforts of all involved, the congregation of the Legionaries has reviewed profoundly.
It has been repeatedly stressed that the revision of the constitutions cannot simply be considered a technical effort, but should be accompanied by a process of examination of life, of review and of spiritual renewal for the institute. Thus far, we have only completed the process of preparation.
We are holding this celebration in view of the Chapter that is about to open: it is an invocation to the Spirit of God to enlighten our hearts; to instill confidence, grace and strength; to reconcile our hearts with God and with one another; and to unite us in love for God, the Church and the Congregation. We expect the miracle of Pentecost to be renewed, the miracle of tongues of fire. While each of us speaks his own language and expresses his own ideas and convictions, with the light of the Spirit and his strength, we are called to understand one another’s language, since each of us is equally moved by the same love, the Holy Spirit. This miracle of unity in language and love, within the richness of the plurality of languages and ideas accompanies us.

To the degree that it depends on you, have present only God and the good of the Church and the Legion, and choose those whom you deem most worthy and suitable for the ministry of authority. For this, it is necessary to free your hearts from resentment, jealousy and envy, and to free your memory so as not to feel burdened by memories that blind and cause suffering.
You are actually reaching this event after a long journey, not without suffering, but which today looks rather calm and hopeful. For this, we have to thank the Lord. The same Lord who has accomplished this work in you is the guarantor who will accompany you even further along the path you are called to follow. What the Lord has done during this time of preparation is like the memory to which you are called to return, so as to regain confidence, serenity and hope: hope in the Lord who has preserved your vocation; hope in the Legion, which, thanks to you, presents itself to this chapter with new strength and new horizons; and hope in the Church, which has accompanied you, particularly through Pope Benedict XVI—who, in the most tragic moment in your history, has had confidence in you and has believed in your capacity for renewal and faithfulness to the Lord—and in the current Supreme Pontiff Pope Francis—who wanted to be present at this important moment in your history. It is also time to thank all those who have shared with me the work of accompanying the Legion on behalf of the Church, especially my councilors, Bishop Brian Farrell, Father Gianfranco Ghirlanda, Father Agostino Montan and Monsignor Mario Marchesi.
In conclusion, I am pleased to recall all that I told you at the beginning of my mandate. In my first homily addressing everyone from this same altar, I expressed my awareness of the vocational difficulty in which you might have found yourselves. I invited you to have trust and to be faithful, to wait for light and peace to return before deciding. In the first letter I wrote you, I also expressed my confidence about the success of the journey that we were called to take together, emphasizing in particular your fidelity and obedience to the Church as a guarantee of success. The vast majority have remained faithful to their vocation as Legionaries. In particular, you are the ones who have gathered today for the Chapter and who want to begin the first stage of the new Legion, with the appointment of new superiors and the approval of the new text to which you are called to conform your life.
I think you are glad to have reaffirmed your “yes” to the Lord. You have suffered much, both internally and externally. You have suffered the shame of being accused, viewed with suspicion and of being exposed to public opinion, even within the Church. You have been able to accept this suffering out of love for your vocation, and out of love for the Church and for the Legion. Suffering has purified you, matured you and made you experience God’s grace and love, who has called you to share in the mystery of redemption through the cross and through sorrow. You have participated in the pain of those who have suffered because of some members of the Legion. You have chosen the only way the Gospel knows for the redemption of evil: not escape, not rejection, not the condemnation of others, but participation, solidarity, and love that enters into sin and sorrow so as to redeem them from the inside. Today we are pleased to participate in this liturgy of the Eucharist, made sharers of the mystery of Christ, who gives up his life for love. Together with him, you renew the offering of your lives.
Let us close with a passage from the letter to the Hebews, regarding the redeeming sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ, who offered the one perfect sacrifice: “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God” (Heb. 9 : 14). The same eternal Spirit has moved your hearts to offer your lives to cooperate with Christ’s redeeming sacrifice for the salvation of your congregation. May that same Spirit always work in your hearts. This same Spirit is always ready to wipe away the tears of your hearts and turn them into precious pearls in the eyes of God.

Celebriamo la Santa Messa dello Spirito Santo per l’apertura del Capitolo Generale Straordinario al quale ci stiamo preparando da circa tre anni e mezzo, con un mandato preciso del Santo Padre Benedetto XVI. Si tratta di un evento di fede, che possiamo celebrare solo sotto la guida dello Spirito Santo. Esso si pone alla fine di un lungo cammino il cui percorso ci è stato indicato ancora dallo stesso Santo Padre; esso è comprensibile pertanto soltanto alla luce del cammino compiuto. I due eventi sono strettamente congiunti: la preparazione ha avuto come meta il Capitolo con gli impegni specifici che esso comporta: la nomina del nuovo governo della congregazione e l’approvazione delle costituzioni, che, con l’impegno di tutti, la congregazione dei Legionari ha rivisto profondamente.
Più volte è stato sottolineato che la revisione delle costituzioni non poteva essere considerata semplicemente un impegno tecnico, ma doveva essere accompagnata da un cammino di esame di vita, di revisione e di rinnovamento spirituale dell’istituto. È stato semplicemente il cammino di preparazione che abbiamo portato a compimento.
Questa celebrazione eucaristica è in vista del Capitolo che si apre: è un’invocazione allo Spirito di Dio perché illumini i cuori, infonda fiducia, grazia e forza; riconcili i nostri cuori con Dio e tra di noi e ci unisca nell’amore verso Dio, la Chiesa e la Congregazione. Ci aspettiamo che si rinnovi il miracolo della Pentecoste, il miracolo delle lingue come di fuoco. Mentre ognuno di noi parla la propria lingua, esprime le proprie idee e le proprie convinzioni, sotto la luce e la forza dello Spirito, è chiamato a comprendere la lingua dell’altro, ugualmente mosso dallo stesso amore, lo Spirito Santo. Il miracolo dell’unità delle lingue e dell’amore, all’interno della ricchezza della pluralità delle lingue e delle idee ci accompagna. Le costituzioni che vi darete pertanto non saranno semplicemente un codice di leggi che vi unisce solo esternamente nella disciplina; ma sarà un testo espressione di una comune vocazione, di un comune ideale, di una comune missione, di un comune percorso di santità; sarà un impulso di una comune tensione verso la realizzazione di progetto di Dio sulla congregazione e su ciascuno di voi, per la gloria di Dio, il servizio alla Chiesa e alla Legione. Il cuore delle costituzioni è il carisma o il patrimonio spirituale dell’Istituto. Il Papa, mentre ci ha indicato che lo scopo principale del cammino percorso e del Capitolo doveva essere la revisione e l’approvazione delle costituzioni, ha sottolineato anche che in tale lavoro doveva essere approfondito il carisma stesso dell’Istituto. Di fatto le costituzioni devono contenere la stessa vocazione e identità dell’istituto (carisma o patrimonio spirituale) e le norme fondamentali per la sua protezione e la sua promozione e sviluppo. È stata questa la preoccupazione che si è avuta nella redazione del testo e che il Capitolo deve avere nell’approvare il nuovo testo da sottoporre al Santo Padre.
Ma se lo scopo principale del Capitolo è l’approvazione delle costituzioni, non meno importante è la nomina del governo dell’Istituto. Compito primario infatti dei superiori è quello di custodire e promuovere lo stesso carisma dell’Istituto; il carisma non è garantito se non nel servizio dell’autorità, esercitata nello spirito evangelico e nella fedeltà alle norme della Chiesa. È un punto al quale si deve dare sempre speciale attenzione. Particolarmente da parte vostra, che su questo aspetto avete una storia di sofferenza, che è importante non dimenticare. È stato questo un tema sul quale il nuovo testo costituzionale è stato attento e vigilante. Tuttavia si sa che le leggi anche se ben fatte sono importanti, ma non bastano se non vi è uno spirito nuovo. Ed è questo spirito nuovo che voi siete chiamati a coltivare e a far crescere dentro di voi quando sarete chiamati a darvi i nuovi superiori. Bisogna avere veramente un cuore nuovo, sia da parte degli elettori che degli eletti. Per quanto dipende da voi, abbiate presente soltanto Dio e il bene della Chiesa e della Legione e scegliete solo chi voi ritenete i più degni ed idonei per il ministero dell’autorità. Per questo è necessario liberare il cuore da risentimenti, gelosie ed invidie; liberare la memoria per non sentirsi appesantiti da ricordi che fanno soffrire e accecano.
Voi di fatto approdate a questo evento dopo un lungo cammino, non privo di sofferenze, ma che oggi si presenta abbastanza sereno e fiducioso. Di questo dobbiamo ringraziare il Signore. Lo stesso Signore che ha compiuto quest’opera in voi è il garante che vi accompagnerà anche nel cammino ulteriore che siete chiamati a percorrere. Ciò che il Signore ha fatto durante questo tempo di preparazione è come la memoria alla quale siete chiamati a tornare, per ritrovare fiducia, serenità e speranza. Speranza nel Signore che vi ha conservato la vocazione; nella Legione che in voi si presenta a questo capitolo con nuove forze e nuovi orizzonti; nella Chiesa che vi ha accompagnato, particolarmente attraverso il Papa Benedetto XVI, che, nel momento più tragico forse della vostra storia, ha avuto fiducia in voi credendo nella vostra capacità di rinnovamento e di fedeltà al Signore, e attraverso l’attuale Sommo Pontefice Papa Francesco, che ha voluto essere presente in questo momento importante della vostra storia. È anche il momento di ringraziare tutti coloro che hanno portato con me la fatica dell’accompagnamento a nome della Chiesa, particolarmente dei miei consiglieri, S. E. Brian Farrell, P. Gianfranco Ghirlanda, P. Agostino Montan, e Mons. Mario Marchesi.
A conclusione, mi piace ricordare quanto ho avuto modo di dirvi all’inizio del mio mandato. Nella mia prima omelia rivolgendomi a tutti, proprio da questo altare, esprimevo la mia consapevolezza della difficoltà vocazionale in cui vi potevate trovare. Vi invitavo alla fiducia e alla fedeltà; attendere che tornasse la luce e la pace prima di decidere. Nella mia prima lettera che vi rivolgevo esprimevo anche la mia fiducia sull’esito positivo del cammino che eravamo chiamati a percorrere insieme, sottolineando particolarmente la vostra fedeltà e obbedienza alla Chiesa, come garanzia di successo. La stragrande maggioranza è rimasta fedele alla propria vocazione di legionario. In particolare lo siete stati voi che oggi siete radunati per il Capitolo e volete segnare la prima tappa della nuova Legione, con la nomina di nuovi superiori e l’approvazione del nuovo testo al quale siete chiamati a conformare la vostra vita.
Credo che siate contenti per avere confermato il vostro sì al Signore. Avete sofferto molto, dentro di voi e fuori di voi. Avete sofferto la vergogna di essere accusati, guardati con sospetto e d’essere esposti alla pubblica opinione, anche all’interno della Chiesa. Avete saputo accettare questa sofferenza per amore della vostra vocazione, per amore della Chiesa e della Legione. La sofferenza vi ha purificati, vi ha maturati, vi ha fatto fare l’esperienza della grazia del Signore e del suo amore, che vi ha chiamati a partecipare al mistero della redenzione mediante la croce e il dolore. Avete partecipato al dolore di quelli che hanno sofferto a causa di alcuni membri della Legione. Avete scelto l’unico modo che il Vangelo conosce per la redenzione del male: non la fuga, non il rifiuto, non la condanna degli altri, ma la partecipazione, la solidarietà, l’amore che entra nello stesso peccato e nello stesso dolore per redimerlo dall’interno. Oggi siete contenti di partecipare a questa liturgia dell’Eucarestia, associati al mistero di Cristo che per amore offre la propria vita. E volete rinnovare nell’offerta di Cristo, l’offerta della vostra vita.
Possiamo concludere con una citazione tratta dalla lettera agli Ebrei a proposito del sacrificio redentore di nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, che ha offerto l’unico e perfetto sacrificio: “quanto più il sangue di Cristo – che mosso da Spirito eterno, offrì se stesso senza macchia a Dio – purificherà la vostra coscienza dalle opere morte per servire al Dio vivo” (Eb 9,14). Lo stesso Spirito eterno ha mosso i vostri cuori a fare l’offerta della vostra vita per cooperare al sacrificio redentore di Cristo per la salvezza della vostra Congregazione. Che lo stesso Spirito operi sempre nel vostro cuore. Lo stesso Spirito, sempre pronto a tergere le lacrime del vostro cuore e a trasformarle in perle preziose di fronte agli occhi di Dio.
