Church Accused of Hiding from Abuse Claims

A former adviser to the Catholic Church in Scotland has accused it of creating a “smokescreen” to divert attention from the latest allegations of sex abuse. The comments were made as the Church announced a three-point plan in response to criticism of how it has dealt with child abuse and sex scandals within its ranks. Alan Draper, an academic who used to advise the Church on child protection issues, handed police last week a confidential file of letters from Scottish bishops detailing more than 20 abuse cases dating back to 1995 that he said had been kept secret.
