Jennifer Hudson will perform on behalf of UJA-Federation of New York at the 23rd Annual Summerfest Concert at the NYCB Theatre, Westbury, on Aug. 7. Roslyn residents are invited to attend. Funds raised by UJA-Federation sustain the activities of more than 100 health, human-service, educational, and community agencies. Father Schuller Lecture

The Voice of the Faithful sponsors Father Helmut Schuller on “The Catholic Tipping Point – Reform and Renewal in the Catholic church.” Father Schuller, a priest of the diocese of Vienna, Austria, is founder of the Priests’ Initiative, a European-wide organization of diocesan priests called for dialogue with the hierarchy on issues pertinent to Catholic spiritual life. Father Schuler is on a countrywide tour of the United States talking to large groups across the nation on these matters. Manhasset is the last stop on the tour before he returns to Austria. He will be speaking at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, 48 Shelter Rock Rd., Manhasset. Meeting will begin at 6:30 pm. Following the presentation there will be open discussion and a Q&A period. Coffee and cookies will be served. All are welcome, bring a friend. Let’s Get Your Lawn In Shape

On Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m., Hicks Nurseries in Westbury presents a free workshop for home gardeners. Plentiful rainfall, cooler temperatures and lack of competition from weeds make fall an ideal time to improve lawns. This free seminar will lay out the steps necessary to bring lawns back to their pre-summer beauty and help gardeners get a head start for next spring. Creative Writing Workshop

Popular teen and “tween” author Lisa Greenwald will be visiting the Gold Coast Public Library on Aug. 8 at 6:30 p.m. Greenwald will read from her latest novel My Summer of Pink & Green while discussing her path to publication and the writing process. A writing workshop will follow. Greenwald is the author of four books for tweens and teens. She works at the Birch Wathen Lenox School Library on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and is a recent graduate from The New School’s MFA program in writing for children. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and young daughter. Copies of her books will be available for signing. This program is for students in grades 5-12. Planting for Privacy

On Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m., Hicks Nurseries will present a planting for privacy workshop. Participants will learn which trees and shrubs will grow tall and full to help make their yard the private oasis they always wanted it to be. Hicks Landscapes’ designer Rich Abate will discuss the best options available to gain valuable privacy or to block out undesirable views.
