A Clifton man who formerly worked as a principal is behind bars for allegedly sexually assaulting a 9-year-old during a church-sanctioned youth overnight camping trip.

Thomas H. Clement, 62, was arrested last week and faces two counts of felony aggravated sexual battery of a minor.

A male victim, who was 9 at the time of the alleged incident, claims he was sexually abused by Clement  in 2009. Police received the victim's complaint in February 2013.

State police say the investigation is ongoing.

Clement worked for Fairfax County Public schools from 1978 until his retirement in 2006.

He worked as a classroom teacher and then as a principal for Bull Run Elementary and Canterbury Woods Elementary. Since retiring from that job, he has worked at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason.

Loretta Madelmayer, a neighbor of Clement, knows him as a kind husband and father.

"Shocked,” she says. “Great neighbors. He's a great guy"
