PRIEST Appears in Court on Sex Abuse Charges

A Catholic priest has appeared in a Melbourne court to face 10 child sexual abuse charges.

Julian Fox, 67, returned to Australia from Rome to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

The charges include counts of buggery and indecent assault.

It is alleged the offences took place at Sunbury and Ferntree Gully between 1976 and 1985.

Fox was not required to enter a plea.

His bail was extended on the proviso he report to police once a week.

Fox, a member of the Salesian order, had been living in Rome but returned to Melbourne to face the charges after negotiations between Catholic Church officials and police.

Police described it as a breakthrough in co-operation with the church.
