A PRIEST has stepped aside from his ministry pending the outcome of a church inquiry into an allegation of child abuse dating back to the mid-1990s.

The priest is currently serving in a rural part of Co Limerick but the issues relate to an allegation when he was based elsewhere. It's understood that while gardai are aware of the issue they have not yet received a complaint. The church has proceeded with its own inquiry nonetheless.

Driver cheats death

A DRIVER cheated death after his 4x4 crashed through a timber fence and down a steep embankment.

It's believed the 00 Dublin- registered Toyota Landcruiser suffered a tyre blowout moments before it lost control and smashed through the road barrier. It came to a standstill on its wheels after dropping about 50ft below the crash barrier. It happened on the M7 Limerick-Dublin motorway, about 3km from Birdhill, Co Tipperary.

Arson breakthrough

GARDAI hunting an arsonist who torched a car belonging to a colleague have made a breakthrough after recovering a lighter.

It appears to have been dropped at the scene as the arsonist made his getaway from Kilmacrennan garda station in Co Donegal. Gardai are now confident that both DNA and fingerprints will be recovered from the item, dropped after community Garda Damian O'Connor's silver Toyota car was set alight in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Ian Simpson from Newcastle, England, is a double winner. The poker player is celebrating having won the PaddyPowerPoker.com Irish Open and its ˆ265,000 prize.

And having secured the tournament trophy, Mr Simpson was clearly feeling lucky when he got down on bended knee and proposed to his girlfriend Emma Rodham in the Burlington Hotel in the early hours of yesterday morning. She said yes.

Celts celebrate

A GATHERING of up to 10,000 Celts is under way in Co Carlow and is expected to provide the area with a ˆ3m economic boom this week.

The six-day Pan Celtic International Festival kicked off last night with an opening ceremony marking the event's status as a unique celebration of Celtic culture.

A highlight for many will be the launch, tonight, by RTE's Kathryn Thomas and Daithi O Se of the English translation of 'Lucinda Sly', the historic novel about the last woman hanged in Carlow jail.
