This afternoon the Master of the Papal Ceremonies, Msgr. Guido Marini will pronounce the “Extra-Omnes” phrase, ordering all cardinals other than the cardinal electors to leave the Sistine Chapel. The first voting session will ensue LIVE BROADCAST 17:35 Doors to the Sistine Chapel have been sealed and locked. THE CONCLAVE HAS BEGUN. 17:34 All cardinals not involved in election of Pontiff are commanded to leave Sistine Chapel and the precincts of the Vatican City State. Only some support staff can remain to assist cardinals. 16.54 Cardinal electors are swearing the oath to observe the rules of the Conclave. 16.45 U.S. Cardinal, James Michael Harvey from the Order of Deacons was the first to enter the Sistine Chapel, followed by Cardinal Giuseppe Versaldi. Cardinal Giovanni Battista was the last to enter. The first from the Order of Bishops - and fifth out of the cardinal electors as a whole - to enter, was Cardinal Godfried Danneels. 16.37 All 115 cardinal electors have entered the Sistine Chapel for the Conclave. After the "Veni Creator" hymn they will swear an oath to observe the rules of the Conclave which include maintaining fidelity to the election of the Pope, maintaining secrecy and never supporting or favouring interference. 16.34 Cardinal electors enter the Sistine Chapel in procession. 16.32 Red folders with Maltese cardinal Prosper Grech's meditation have been placed on the tables especially prepared for the Conclave "so ehoever wishes to can read the text as it is being pronounced" the Master of the Papal Ceremonies, Mgr. Guido Marini told cardinals who are entering in the Pauline Chapel for the start of the Conclave. 15:57 Cardinal electors leave the Domus Santa Marta residence and head for the Vatican Apostolic Palace, where, at 16:30 approx., they will begin their processon into the Sistine Chapel for the start of the Conclave. As Vatican Radio reports, at 16:15 (CET) the 115 cardinal electors will “gather in the Pauline Chapel for a moment of collection and prayer and from there they will process in order of precedence through the Sala Regia to the Sistine Chapel invoking the Holy Spirit.” The procession will begin at 16:30, with the Cross and the Book of Gospels carried at the front. After chanting the Veni Creator, cardinals will swear an oath to observe the rules of Conclave which include maintaining fidelity to the election of the Pope, maintaining secrecy and never supporting or favouring interference. The Master of the Papal Ceremonies, Mgr. Guido Marini will then pronounce the “Extra-Omnes” (everybody out) phrase, ordering all cardinals other than the cardinal electors to leave the Sistine Chapel. Only the Master of Papal Ceremonies and Cardinal Prosper Grech will stay for the meditation. Once this is over, they will also leave the Sistine Chapel and the Conclave will begin.
