CARDINAL George Pell says he will vote for someone with long-term vision and media and managerial skills when he gets to Rome to help elect the new pope.
The Sydney-based Cardinal will be flying to The Vatican tomorrow to join more than 100 cardinals from across the world to elect a new head of the Catholic Church following Pope Benedict’s resignation.
They meet at the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City and will remain there until a decision is made.
"We want somebody with vision, able to plan for the future, who can take charge with the media and speak to the world, especially to those who half believe or don't believe at all'' Cardinal Pell told the Inner West Courier during his visit to St Vincent’s Catholic Primary School in Ashfield today.
Cardinal Pell said he was also looking for someone with "managerial” skills in the papal role.
"It's far and away from the most important task but it's one the tasks,'' he said.
Cardinal Pell was at St Vincent's to present the school with a certificate following its excellent results in the Cyclic Review and the Archbishops Charter for Catholic Schools.
"In 2012 a Cyclic Review process was undertaken where as a school community staff, parents and students reflected on two questions firstly where are we now in our school's learning improvement journey and secondly what are some future directions,'' Principal Maria Havryliv said.
She said Cardinal Pell had helped show her students that they were a part of a global community.
"When he spoke to the children he spoke about them being a part of the global catholic community, evident in his attending Rome for the election of the new Pope,'' she said.
Ms Havryliv said the school tries to instil a sense of social awareness amongst its students through programs which help to develop the understanding of Catholic social teaching.
