A principal of an all-boys Catholic high school has resigned after school officials discovered 'inappropriate' communication between him and at least one of his students.
Barry Fitzpatrick, who has served as principal of Mount St. Joseph High School in Baltimore for the past 18 years, is now under police investigation after this week’s startling discovery.
In a letter to students' parents on Wednesday the school announced they had accepted his resignation on Tuesday and had contacted the 'proper authorities.'
'We recently discovered communications from Mr. Fitzpatrick that he acknowledged were inappropriate, and we accepted his resignation,' the letter read. 'As required by law, we have reported these communications to the proper authorities.'
Police say Fitzpatrick, who had held his position since 1994, has not been charged in any crime.
'Our students mean everything to us,’ the letter continued. ‘As such, we have the highest expectations for our faculty and administrators. And when these standards are not met, we have a responsibility to our boys and their families to take action.’
Fitzpatrick previously taught Latin at the school and also served as a soccer coach, the Catonsville Patch reports.
He also served as principal at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Wheaton from 1980 to 1986.
Assistant Principal David Norton, the school's Director of Studies, has since been instated to Acting Principal until a replacement can be made with a board meeting scheduled for Friday.
TheBaltimore Sun reports Fitzpatrick was raised in Brooklyn, New York before attending Catholic University in Washington D.C, as well as Loyola and Harvard University.
'He's an avid sports fan and a voracious reader,' his biography read before removed from the school's website. 'But his true love will always be his students.'
