A Walk on the Fr. Wild Side: a Pope, Cardinal Law & a Diagnosed Jesuit

We have child sex abuse by clergy and the ensuing coverup, dirty real estate deals, police investigations, crooked politicians and attorneys, private investigators hunting victims, diversion of federal funds, funny loans from colleges run by Jesuits, off-shore shell companies, wire transfers to the Cayman Islands and in the end lots of money and lots of victims of the Jesuits. We also have Donald J. McGuire SJ at the heart of it all. McGuire knew many people, many of which want to pretend they didn't know him. He knew hundreds of priests (many of them also convicted of child sex abuse – we believe they call that a "ring" of criminals). He also knew many people who knew what he was doing to children and never called the police. That list includes bishops, Provincials, Jesuit Roma Curia, Jesuit Generals, Cardinals, the head of the Legionaries of Christ Marcial Maciel (more later on this), at least three candidates for sainthood and two Popes, who knew him personally, one who then simply wrote to him as "Your Friend, Joe Ratzinger". Another man who knew McGuire very well was his Provincial, former President of Marquette and current Advancement Director of the Chicago – Detroit – Wisconsin Province, Robert Wild SJ. But before we start our walk on the Wild side, WTK wants to just assure the Vatican we have more documents before they go to all that work of shredding the McGuire files. Too late. Like this boring one about Donald McGuire SJ to Robert Wild SJ. Donald McGuire SJ was riding high in the early 1990s. With his Mother Teresa connections he branched out to become the Spiritual Advisor to the National Catholic Physician's Guild, which in 1997 changed its name to the Catholic Medical Association. Under supervision of Cardinal Bernard Law, the head holy man of the Physician's Guild, McGuire seemingly even alienated him to the point he suggested McGuire be terminated before the end of his tenure. Unfortunately, Cardinal Law didn't exercise the same judgement regarding his abuser priests in Boston before he had to dodge an arrest warrant and flee to the Vatican. As with any endeavor McGuire undertook, this lead to chaos and heartache for his then Provincial Robert Wild SJ. Apparently physicians are rather good at spotting mental health issues and in no short time Cardinal Law and Fr. Wild were receiving "diagnoses" from doctors about Fr. McGuire. Such professional terms as "deviant", "megalomanic", "unbalanced" and "major psychological problems" are tossed around by doctors calling Fr. Wild about the behavior of his priest Donald McGuire SJ and his "untreated serious mental disorder". Even other Jesuits were starting to wonder about the mental health of their brother. But no one did anything for almost two decades. Notice how Wild references no problems in "this area", can one assume there are other areas that are a problem? In fact there were many problems in other areas where Fr. Robert Wild's decisions lead to the continued sexual abuse of children. We will all know about that a little later.
