Wheeling Jesuit University, in West Virginia but run by the Society of Jesus of the Maryland Province, has been in the news again, and if it’s on this site, it’s not for the right reasons. Plus it gives us a chance to recap one of our favorite topics

10/14/9 – WJU picketed by SNAP (Survivor’s Network of those Abused by Priests) because of WJU’s ongoing harboring of accused predator Thomas F. (Tommy) Gleeson, S.J.

Aside from [Rev. Anton} Harris [S.J.] sending suggestive pictures of naked men, he said, Gleeson, . . . asked Bollard to masturbate with him. [Another Jesuit, Rev. Andrew] Sotelo, a faculty member at St. Ignatius [High, where Bollard taught], suggested that they cruise gay bars, Bollard [said]. When he reported these passes to a supervisor [the provincial], he said, he was handed a coffee cup printed with the words “No whining.”

5/14/11 – Convicted felon Milorad “Rod” Blagojevich‘s good friend and campaign manager, David Wilhelm, awarded an honorary degree by Wheeling Jesuit University.

6/25/11 – J. Davitt McAteer inducted into WJU Hall of Honor.

J. Davitt McAteer knows Jesuits don’t need spacesuits…

2/16/12 – Federal agents raid WJU’s office and V.P. McAteer’s office at WJU seizing files, computers, and cellphones. NASA agents, under oath, believes WJU and McAteer committed multiple felonies!

NASA Special Agent: “Documents obtained thus far also evidence knowledge and intent by the Wheeling Jesuit University Board of Directors to circumvent the [law] and improperly divert Federal Government funds for the purposes of sustaining Wheeling Jesuit University in its general, non-federal program educational areas.” — ¶ 16, p. 9.

McAteer has been accused by a NASA fraud investigator of conspiring with the university to use millions of federal grant dollars for personal gain and the school’s benefit.

9/27/12 – WJU’s Saint Thomas More Hall sexual assault on student. Police investigate. Police are investigating a Wheeling Jesuit student’s report that she was sexually assaulted by five male students in an on-campus dormitory.

Wheeling Jesuit President Richard Beyer on Wednesday said the university received a student complaint within the past 24 hours, but he would not be more specific regarding the nature of that complaint. ”Any complaint is taken seriously, and we have a very specific process in place to address any issues brought forth by students,” Beyer said, adding that campus safety is his top priority.
