Sparta Pastor Arrested for Sexual Assault

[with video] SPARTA, Wisconsin (WXOW) - A pastor of a Sparta church is arrested on allegations he sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl. Sparta Police Chief Michael Kass says in a release that James Monson, 41, was taken into custody Monday evening on charges of Sex with a Child Age 16 or Older and Sexual Exploitation by Therapist. Kass says Monson is the Pastor of the Gaining Ground Community Church, 620 Industrial Drive in Sparta. Monday, the parent of the girl went to Sparta Police to report what was believed to be inappropriate touching between Monson and her daughter. The victim was only identified as a 16-year-old girl from Texas who was being home-schooled in Sparta according to Kass. When the girl was interviewed, she admitted having sexual contact with Monson several times. Monson appeared Wednesday afternoon in Monroe County Circuit Court for a bond hearing. He was released on a $25,000 signature bond after his attorney argued Mason has no criminal record and his ties to the community. Charges are expected to be filed when Mason returns to court on February 27th.
