ALABASTER, Ala. (AP) - A longtime Alabama schoolteacher facing sexual abuse allegations has been charged with molesting a second female student.

Shelby County District Attorney Robbie Owens said Danny Acker was charged Friday afternoon with one additional account of first-degree sexual abuse involving a former student.

Acker was arrested Thursday on three counts of sexual abuse involving another student before he retired in 2009. Police said he confessed to molesting more than 20 girls.

They have asked anyone with information to come forward.

The district attorney said he could not comment on whether the new charge was a result of that request.

The district attorney said Acker remains in jail with bond set at $545,000.

An attorney for Acker didn't return a message seeking comment.

He says his relationship with the Acker family dates back 33-years.

He says he's shocked by the charges and also wants the entire community to know that his church does not condone any type of abuse, especially against children.

Pastor Shaw says one of Acker's brothers is a former member of the church.

Back in 1992 when Acker junior faced allegations of child abuse, which were later dropped, the pastor says the Acker family reserved space at the church and held an event to raise money for Acker's defense.

Pastor Shaw says he now regrets that decision.

"In hindsight, I'm sorry that we allowed them to do that. If I had any indication that these charges would be made and so many people, even if one charge were true." He adds, "I regret it. I apologize to the community because I want this community to know First Baptist Church of Pelham does not tolerate child abuse in any form or fashion."

Pastor Shaw says his church works to protect children.

He says everyone who works around kids must undergo a background check and every room in the area where children are has a camera.

I also called Acker's father, Daniel Acker, Sr. who is a Shelby County Commissioner. He wasn't available. But, his mother Judy Acker told me over the phone, they've hired an attorney and are supporting their son who they both love very much. She also admitted the charges were a surprise. Beyond that, she had no comment.
