SALINAS, Calif. —

A Monterey County judge has issued an arrest warrant for a Salinas priest believed to be in Mexico after he was recently released from jail for sexually abusing a teen.

The Monterey County Herald reports that Antonio Cortes is wanted for allegedly failing to report to a probation officer and failing to register as a sex offender after his release on Nov. 15.

Officials believe Cortes has returned to his hometown in central-western Mexico.

If he is arrested, returned to Monterey County and found in violation of his probation, Cortes could be sentenced to three years in prison

Cortes' attorney, Miguel Hernandez, told the newspaper he doesn't know if Cortes will return on his own.

Cortes was sentenced in May after pleading no contest for sodomizing a minor in 2009 while working at a church in Salinas.
