Author Joseph Azzopardi raises the issue of abuse and suffering inflicted on boys who attended institutions run by the Christian Brothers.

(BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA) - Bookpal today announced the highly anticipated release of Weaning of the Lambs, a brutally raw and tragic account of the life of Joseph.

Growing up on the Mediterranean island of Malta with a big loving family and two devoted parents, Joseph was living a perfectly happy life.

When his father dies, the family starts to fall apart, as Joseph's mother struggles to raise five children on her own.

Caving under financial pressure, his mother makes the difficult decision to send Joseph to Australia to continue his education.

His mother promised to stay in touch with him by weekly mail.

Joseph would never get to see his mother's letters, nor would she receive his.

Instead of an education Joseph and nurture during these tender years of his life, Joseph became a slave working in paddock with hard labour, abused sexually and physically tormented to a point of suicide.

All along his mother had no idea of what was going on.

Weaning of the Lambs is more than just a story of torment and betrayal, it is story of how a loving family can give the courage to overcome adversity.

Joseph Azzopardi was born in Malta in 1947. He migrated to Australia at the age of 12 as part of a child migrant scheme. Joseph has written several published poems and holds a diploma in professional counseling, with a major in abuse and abuse trauma.

Weaning of the Lambs is his first novel, inspired by his life story.

From a passage of Weaning of the Lambs: He was about hundred yards from shore when he suddenly couldn't feel his legs. "I must not panic," he said aloud and tried to swim on, but was getting pulled under.

His legs had cramped and all he could feel was pins and needles. He was running out of breath and was still a long way from safety. He could feel himself passing out when he felt an arm under his chin and felt himself moving toward the shore."
