FRESNO, Calif.—Pope Benedict XVI has named a new bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fresno.

The appointment of Armando Ochoa was announced Thursday by the church's papal ambassador to the United States, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano.

Ochoa succeeds Bishop John Steinbock, who died in December from lung cancer.

The 68-year-old Ochoa is a California native who has been a bishop in El Paso, Texas, since 1996. Prior to that, he served as priest and auxiliary bishop in several Los Angeles parishes, where he also led Spanish-speaking ministry services.

Ochoa has also served on bishops' committees on Hispanic affairs.

The Fresno diocese serves about 1 million Catholics, or 39 percent of the total population.

Church officials say Ochoa's installation will occur within the next 60 days.
