A further dozen men have alleged they were abused by a former Sydney school chaplain who was recently defrocked by the Pope.

John Sidney Denham will not be eligible for parole until he is 80 after he admitted last year that he abused 39 boys, mainly in Newcastle in the 1970s and '80s.

The latest claims bring the total number of alleged victims to 51 and mean Denham is facing an additional 40 charges.

The former Catholic priest had also spent time working at the exclusive Sydney boys school Waverley College as well as on the mid-north coast.

Several of Denham's victims have committed suicide and others have shared in a multi-million-dollar compensation package paid for by the Maitland-Newcastle Catholic Diocese.

The diocese has previously acknowledged the harm caused by Denham's actions, and this year Pope Benedict defrocked him.

Maitland-Newcastle Catholic Diocese Bishop Bill Wright has reached out to the latest alleged victims.

He says he is praying that they have strength and support to deal with their painful memories.

He adds that he admires their courage in coming forward.

Denham is described by some victim advocates as one of the worst offending paedophiles in Australia.
