North Carolina attorneys and child advocacy groups say now could be the time to improve the state's child sex abuse statutes. There is currently no statute of limitations for criminal felony cases, but there is a statute of limitations for civil matters.

Statute of limitations is front and center nationally. Syracuse assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine was fired Sunday after allegations of sexual abuse. Because of New York State's statute of limitations, some of those charges can't be used against him criminally.

In North Carolina, Charlotte attorney Seth Langson says generally the statute runs out once a victim has turned 21, which can make it difficult for a victim to take an alleged abuser to court.

"You have to look through all the facts, see if there has been additional contact, if there has been an institution involved or there have been some acts to conceal," said attorney Seth Langson.

Child advocacy groups say recent national sex abuses cases is helping raise awareness for better victim protection.
