BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. —

A former Roman Catholic priest convicted of raping an altar boy could spend the rest of his life behind bars.

The Bristol Herald Courier reports that 77-year-old William Casey was sentenced Wednesday to 35 to 40 years in prison with a recommendation that he be released after serving 30 percent of the sentence (http://bit.ly/vEGhf9).

Casey, of Greeneville, Tenn., was convicted earlier this year of raping Warren Tucker of Jeffersonville, Ind., when Tucker was 13 and 14 years old.

A jury found Casey guilty of aggravated rape and one count of criminal sexual misconduct. Casey had earlier pleaded guilty to similar North Carolina charges and faces prosecution on sex charges in Virginia.

In Tennessee, he also was a priest in Greeneville, Rogersville, Kingsport and Knoxville.

Tucker attended the church school at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Kingsport when Casey was the senior priest there in the 1970s.

Tucker had testified that he felt powerless to resist a man he believed to be "representative of God on earth." He said he had considered Casey a father figure.

Tucker has said he hopes his case encourages others to speak out if they've been abused by priests or clergy members.

The Associated Press, which does not routinely identify victims of sex crimes, has identified Tucker because he went public with the allegations.
