The medical examiner's office has ruled that reverend Robert Carlson died as a result of drowning by suicide.

Sunday, authorities found his body in the Penobscot River, near the Penobscot narrows bridge, after a Bucksport woman reported an abandoned car on the bridge.

Monday, TV5 news learned State Police were investigating Carlson before he died because of a letter sent to the Penobscot county district attorney's office.

That letter was released Tuesday, and said, in part: "I feel that you should be made aware that he has sexually abused a young boy several years ago. Even though as hard as it may be to believe it. This boy is now a grown man and they still have a secret relationship. At one time he lived with Robert Carlson at this home at Brewer Lake when he was pastor at the East Orrington Congregational Church. He has financially helped him with apartments, travel, rehabilitation and trouble with the law."

State police say they've interviewed six people so far.

Spokesman Steve McCausland says there may be more people who want to talk and they'll leave the investigation open until they hear from all of them.

Monday, a second letter was given to state police.

It was sent anonymously to the Katahdin area council, Boy Scouts of America.

Council CEO Marshal Steinmann tells us the letter accused Carlson of abuse, but he says the issue did not involve scouting.

Steinmann says Carlson's church used scouting as part of its ministry, but Carlson was never a registered member of the boy scouts of America.
