Corbett on Meet the Press: 'This Is about the Victims' The Newsworks November 13, 2011 http://www.newsworks.org/index.php/the-feed/item/29828-corbett-on-meet-the-press-this-is-about-the-victims [with video] Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett appeared on Meet the Press to discuss the latest in the Penn State child sexual abuse scandal on Sunday morning. When asked by David Gregory if there are more victims of former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, Corbett could not give a definite answer. But the governor admitted that it would not be surprising for more victims to come forward. Corbett added that he along with state police investigators encourage any other victims to come forward about possible abuse. Gregory pressed Corbett about the legal and moral obligations of assistant coach Mike McQueary, who in 2002, said he saw Sandusky sexually assault a young boy in the showers at the University Park Campus, but never went to police. "The Attorney General made a decision . . . that he is a witness to this case, that he met the minimum obligation of reporting it up, but did not, in my opinion meet a moral obligation that all of us would have," said Corbett. Corbett added that he expects a new law on how child abuse is reported within the state of Pennsylvania to be passed before the new year based on the Penn State sexual abuse scandal. "I think one of the lessons we need to learn from this is that when people see something like this or hear something like this, you need to investigate right away, you need to report. We have lost the focus of what is in the best interest of the child when you see something like this," said Corbett. For the full Meet the Press interview, watch the above clip. |
