	Children Deserve Overall Protection Albany Times Union November 13, 2011 http://www.timesunion.com/opinion/article/Children-deserve-overall-protection-2267368.php Fired Penn State football coach Joe Paterno would likely have been a "mandated reporter" under New York state law. Certified school personnel and employees are included in the state list of over 40 professions. Boston's Cardinal Bernard Law would not have been mandated in our state, nor are bishops. The efforts of state legislators like Assemblyman John McEneney to include religious leaders have been rebuffed in Albany for the past decade. Though more than 30 priests of the Albany Roman Catholic Diocese have been removed from the ministry by the bishop, they have not been required to go through the legal system for adjudication. Children under the supervision of "good" coaches and "good" clergy still need comprehensive legal protections. The state Legislature should close the gaps in the current mandatory reporters list.
