Jerry Sandusky's Charity Second Mile May Hold More Secrets New Jersey Newsroom November 12, 2011 http://www.newjerseynewsroom.com/professional/former-penn-state-football-coach-jerry-sandusky-may-have-more-secrets [April 3 story in the Beaver County Times] Just when you think you've heard everything in the Penn State allegations, reports are saying it might be a lot worse. The latest story relates to former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky's charity Second Mile, whose stated purpose was to give hope and support to children dealing with adversity. Weei.com reported that Pittsburgh reporter and radio host Mark Madden told a Boston radio program about a rumor he had heard some time ago: Sandusky and Second Mile had been selling young boys' sexual services for money. Madden said the accusations are just rumors right now, but that the incident was being investigated by two prominent columnists. Madden wrote a story for the Beaver County Times in April 2011 calling for Penn State officials to explain the allegations against defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky for improper conduct with underage males. Madden pointed out Sandusky's timeline in his story, writing that Sandusky was initially accused in 1998, retired in 1999, and never coached college football again. He had been recognized as college football's top assistant coach in 1986 and 1999, but there were never any stories about Sandusky being pursued for a high-profile job, or about him coming out of retirement. Madden believes that Paterno and Penn State administration knew. He said, "My opinion is when Sandusky quit, everybody knew -- not just at Penn State." Madden's allegations are being given credence by some prominent figures. "Having been in this profession a long time and knowing how close coaching staffs are, I knew that this was a secret that was kept secret," former Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer said, according to the International Business Times. "Everyone on that staff had to have known." And Gregg Doyel of CBS Sports tweeted that the rumor was on the state attorney general's radar, while SportsbyBrooks wrote that a new, major allegation against Sandusky would "horrify the public." Christianpost.com reported that Madden later went on Twitter and posted, "I normally abhor giving RUMORS credence. But whole Sandusky scandal started out as a RUMOR. It gets deeper and more disgusting all the time… I am NOT rumor's original source. [Why does] Sandusky deserve benefit of doubt?" |
