A top QC called for tougher rules to protect pupils at faith schools yesterday as he stripped monks of control of a London institution beset by sex abuse.

St Benedict's School chiefs offered a "heartfelt apology for past failures" as Lord Carlile of Berriew detailed 21 attacks over 40 years.

The peer said he hoped his decision to take powers away from Ealing Abbey would "set a template" for other schools.

Four top fee-paying schools including Ampleforth College, North Yorkshire, and Downside near Bath have similar structures to St Benedict's.

Lord Carlile detailed a catalogue of failures to intervene by the west London abbey after abuse claims came to light.

Describing the school set-up as "wholly outdated and demonstrably unacceptable," he called for two trusts to be set up to strip "all power from the abbey" while maintaining a Benedictine connection.

Campaigner Jonathan West, whose son attended St Benedict's, said the report did not "go far enough."
