Former Church Volunteer Pleads Guilty to Sex Abuse, Child Porn By Meghan Potkins Calgary Herald November 1, 2011 www.calgaryherald.com/news/Former+church+volunteer+pleads+guilty+abuse+child+porn/5636919/story.html A former church youth volunteer has pleaded guilty to 18 charges of child pornography and sexually abusing boys over a five-year period. In an agreed statement of facts, Roderick Kyle Janssen is described as having "used his position as a church counsellor and trusted friend to take boys on trips and bring them to his house to hang out, play video (games) and use his hot tub." Among the charges Janssen pleaded guilty to were creating and distributing child pornography and sexual assault. The 35-year-old stood in court Monday to deliver his guilty plea while several family members of the 10 boys Janssen is accused of photographing and filming looked on. Janssen began taking pictures and videos of the boys, all under the age of 14, in January 2006. But by 2009 Janssen had progressed to sexual touching of six of the boys, all between the ages of six and 13. According to a statement agreed to by the defence, many of the assaults occurred in the basement bedroom of a home Janssen shared with his brother in Calgary. It was in his bedroom that Janssen would have the victims change out of their bathing suits after using his hot tub. Many of the incidents may have occurred while parents of the boys were in the house. By October 2010 Janssen had caught the attention of an FBI agent working undercover to monitor the exchange of child pornography on an Internet file-sharing network. According to court documents, Janssen distributed more than 70,000 images and videos of the sexual abuse of children while operating under the username "jonnydoitmore." Then last April, members of the southern Alberta Internet Child Exploitation unit executed a search warrant at Janssen's residence in southeast Calgary. During the police interviews that followed, Janssen admitted to an addiction to child pornography and told police: "I know what I did was wrong" and "as much as I'd like to change, I can't help it" and "I can't stop it." Janssen will undergo an assessment to determine whether he should be designated as a long-term offender or dangerous offender. Janssen will appear back in court on Feb 1.
