It happened just before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 2700 block of Fall Avenue, in the city's Jeff-Vander-Lou neighborhood. The area is northwest of the intersection of North Grand Boulevard and Cass Avenue. The dead man was identified as Dwight A. Brown, 19, of the 2900 block of James "Cool Papa" Bell Avenue. The man who shot Brown was 27. Police did not release his name. Police found witnesses who corroborated the man's account of the shooting. Brown died at a hospital. In January 2010, Brown pleaded guilty in St. Louis Circuit Court of second-degree burglary and tampering, both felonies, and misdemeanor resisting or interfering with arrest. Court records indicate that Brown was put on probation for the felonies and sentenced to 37 days in jail for the misdemeanor. A docket summary of the plea shows that one of the judge's conditions for probation was that Brown continue taking his medication. SAUGET > Worker rescued from grain bin — Rescuers shoveled corn out of the way to free a man who was trapped inside a grain bin for nearly two hours Thursday morning. The man, 43, of Columbia, Ill., was conscious and talking throughout the rescue as he stood waist-deep in grain. He became trapped shortly before 9 a.m. in a 75-foot-high silo at the Center Ethanol Co. plant, 231 Monsanto Avenue in Sauget. The man had gone into the bin for routine maintenance, said Randy Lay with the St. Clair County emergency services rescue team. The corn shifted "like an avalanche" around the man, said Capt. Dan Sutter of the St. Louis Fire Department. Another worker who was at the opening of the silo saw that happen and called for help. O'Fallon Fire Chief Brent Saunders said crews lowered a tube around the man to protect him from the crush of the grain. They then shoveled the corn away from his body to give him room to stand up. Once he was rescued, the man was taken by medical helicopter to St. Louis University Hospital. The helicopter crew told dispatchers that the man had some pain in his right leg but was able to move his legs and arms. Authorities did not release the man's name. ST. LOUIS > Two allege abuse at boys home — Two men filed a joint lawsuit Thursday in St. Louis Circuit Court alleging authorities didn't do enough to stop sexual abuse they suffered as minors living at the former St. Joseph's Home for Boys in the 1990s. Antoine Conners and Bryan Mitchell, both in their 20s, say they were abused by other residents staying at the home, according to the lawsuit. The Missouri Department of Family Services placed Conners and Mitchell in St. Joseph's. According to the lawsuit, Conners lived at the home from July 1994 to August 1995; Mitchell was there from July 1994 to May 1996. Conners and Mitchell currently live outside of Missouri, said plaintiff's attorney Nicole Gorovsky. At the time of the abuse, St. Joseph's was run by Catholic Services for Children and Youth, now Good Shepherd Children and Family Services, according to the lawsuit. Also named in the suit are the Archdiocese of St. Louis, which helped oversee the home, and Archbishop Robert Carlson. The archdiocese acknowledged the lawsuit but had no comment. St. Joseph's Home for Boys closed in 2001. It was at 4753 South Grand Boulevard. ST. LOUIS > Police identify shooting victim — The man found fatally shot Wednesday inside a car in the 5400 block of Ridge Avenue has been identified as Ronnie Pleasant Jr., 25, of St. Louis. Pleasant was found shot in the chest about 6:40 p.m. He was inside a car on Ridge near Arlington Avenue in the city's Hamilton Heights neighborhood. Pleasant was taken to a hospital, where he died. Pleasant lived in the 4200 block of West Margaretta Avenue. Police did not release a possible motive for the slaying. ST. CHARLES COUNTY > Life in prison for sex offender — Corey L. Brown, 46, of the 1300 block of Ithaca Circle in St. Charles, was sentenced Thursday to two consecutive life terms plus 30 years in prison for having sexual contact with two girls younger than 12. Brown, formerly of Lake Saint Louis, pleaded guilty Aug. 1 on two counts of statutory rape, seven counts of statutory sodomy and five counts of child molestation, all felonies. He admitted having sexual contact with the girls dating to 2007. ST. CHARLES COUNTY > 14 years for statutory sodomy — Francis L. Beckwith, 70, of the 1300 block of Presidents Landing Drive, was sentenced Thursday to 14 years in prison for having sexual contact with a girl younger than 17. Beckwith pleaded guilty Aug. 8 on three counts of felony statutory sodomy and two counts of misdemeanor child molestation. He admitted to sexual contact with the girl between December 2009 and November 2010. ST. CHARLES COUNTY > Drug treatment for man who broke into gun stores — Matthew A. Faupel, 28, of the 100 block of Gibraltar Point Court in St. Charles County, was ordered Thursday to complete a prison drug treatment program. If he fails, he could serve a seven-year sentence for burglaries at two St. Peters gun stores. Faupel pleaded guilty Aug. 8 on two counts of burglary and two counts of stealing a firearm. He cut through a wall at C&S Metall-Werkes Limited, 4025 Old Highway 94 South, in June 2010, and took several guns and silencers. He also was involved in taking guns from Pistols Plus, 3004 South St. Peters Parkway on Dec. 17. Faupel said he stole the guns to support a drug habit. Circuit Judge Nancy Schneider ordered him to complete a 120-day drug treatment program in prison. If he completes the program, he could be placed on probation for five years, Schneider said. If he fails, he would start serving a seven-year sentence.
