Video Shows Break-In That Sparked Eddie Long Sex Scandal WSB September 23, 2011 http://www.wsbtv.com/news/29271690/detail.html [with video] LITHONIA, Ga. -- Channel 2 Action News has obtained the surveillance video from the controversial break-in at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church last year. The break-in led to the explosive sexual abuse lawsuit against well-known pastor Bishop Eddie Long. Channel 2's Tom Jones talked to a former New Birth security guard who said the video helped keep him out of prison on burglary charges. "Yes! It proves it, cause look at the guy when he comes inside the church," Anthony Boyd said while looking at the video. "Look how small I am. Look how big he is. And look at the other guy, he shows his face like he don't care." Boyd is talking about Maurice Robinson. Investigators identified him as one of the two men seen breaking into the church around 4:50 a.m. in June 2011, according to the video. The video shows the men walking around, one whose face is covered, and then disappearing. It appears the men have on gloves. Boyd said the men were there to gather evidence in the planned sexual abuse lawsuit against Long. He said Robinson, then a friend, knew cameras were inside. "They didn't care cause their job was to get inside that church and get that evidence of the sexual stuff," he said. Robinson and three others eventually filed and settled a sexual abuse lawsuit against Long for an undisclosed amount of money. But as far as the break-in is concerned, police believed Boyd was also involved. He and Robinson were charged with burglary. Robinson agreed to a pretrial diversion program which he has since completed. Boyd consistently proclaimed his innocence and refused entry into the program. He faced a 20-year sentence. Then, Long wrote the district attorney a letter asking that the charges be dropped. Boyd believes the letter and the video helped him avoid prison. He said a judge watched the video and knew it wasn't him. "He told them to stop the video. He was like (expletive) it. That ain't Anthony Boyd," he said. Investigators couldn't positively identify the second man, but said they think they know who he is. |
