Senate Urged to Probe Xenophon's Use of Privilege

Civil Liberties Council thinks Nick Xenophon should apologise

The Council for Civil Liberties has written to the Senate president accusing Nick Xenophon of an abuse of parliamentary privilege.

The independent senator used Federal Parliament this week to name an Adelaide priest who is accused of rape more than four decades ago.

Council for Civil Liberties president Terry O'Gorman says he wants the complaint referred to the Senate Privileges Committee.

"If it finds that it is justified, then Senator Xenophon should apologise to the priest concerned and should be made to do so in the Senate where he has very seriously traduced and trashed this particular priest's reputation," he said.

The Adelaide priest has denied the allegation against him.
