THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a Catholic priest, Reverend Father Remigius Onyelu, for allegedly defrauding an Abuja-based business woman, Mrs Ijeoma Ugwah.

The priest, who was arrested at the Pope John 11 Guest House in Wuse 2 area of Abuja, at about 10.00 a.m on Monday, was said to have conspired with the younger sister of the victim, Ebere David, to obtain the money from her under the guise of helping her to process university education for her daughter in Canada, where Reverend Father Onyelu claimed he had been on pastoral assignment for 15 years.

Two years after making the payments, the victim was shocked to discover that she had fallen into the hand of a scammer, who hid under his pastoral duties to scam unsuspecting parents seeking admission for their children in Canada.

She subsequently wrote a petition to the EFCC chairman, Mrs Farida Waziri, who promptly assigned a team of operatives to put the priest on its watch list and arrest him any time he returned to Nigeria.

A source in the EFCC disclosed that while the priest was being detained for interrogation, operatives were said to have declared a manhunt for his accomplice, who had gone into hiding.

When contacted on phone, EFCC spokesman, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the arrest of the priest but declined further comment.
