Jimmy Carlino has struggled with depression and anxiety in the years since he first publicly accused Christ the King High School coach Bob Oliva of sexual abuse. But Carlino says things would have been far worse without the counseling and guidance he has received from Father Robert Hoatson, whose organization Road to Recovery assists clergy abuse survivors.

Carlino says it's time for him to give something back, so he's organizing a golf tournament to benefit Road to Recovery that will be held at Inverrary Country Club in Lauderhill, Fla., on Oct. 20.

"The biggest thing about Father, when he reached to offer help, he didn't push himself on me. He just let me know that he was there for me," Carlino says. "For those of us who have been abused, if someone is pushy with us, we run. The tireless work he does for survivors is just amazing."

Carlino will also talk with Hoatson about Road to Recovery and his experiences as an abuse survivor on Wednesday on DeFoRadio.com, a sports website founded by longtime South Florida broadcaster Jeff DeForrest. He's back on the website later that day to kick off "A Dog's Only Wish," a weekly show that focuses on man's best friend.

"When you get involved with helping other survivors, you help your own recovery, too," Hoatson says. "To have somebody who has been helped by Road to Recovery say they want to work with us is very satisfying."

For more information on the tournament, call Carlino at 561-400-4099 or Hoatson at 862-368-2800.
