Police ditched an investigation into a Catholic priest accused of molesting schoolchildren in Victoria because they considered him too old to bring to justice.

A Herald Sun investigation claims detectives have chosen not to speak to another priest who is working near the Vatican, despite an abuse complaint made against him more than a year ago.

The News Ltd paper says investigations were launched into the two priests, who taught at Salesian College Rupertswood, Sunbury.

It said detectives had requested to visit one priest in Samoa but were knocked back by senior police because of his health and age.

Salesian provincial Father Frank Moloney told the Herald Sun the priest is 85 years old, incontinent and prone to heart problems and blackouts.

Father Moloney said the priest's doctors would oppose his transfer to Australia, "but I will insist, even if it kills him".

The victims allege they were abused by the two priests in the 1960s and 1980s.

The second priest has refused to be interviewed by police, but it is believed he has told superiors he would return to Australia to face his accusers, if asked.
