Church Priest Booked for Molesting a Minor By Pradip Kumar Maitra Hindustan Times September 5, 2011 http://www.hindustantimes.com/Church-priest-booked-for-molesting-a-minor/Article1-741966.aspx The city police on Monday booked priest of a church for allegedly molesting a minor girl. The incident created a furore in the community. The accused is absconding after the incident. Police sources said that the accused priest, MP Kurien, molested the daughter of the church caretaker. Kurien was appointed as priest of a church at Jafarnagar locality of west Nagpur about two years ago. The complainant caretaker, Shyam K George, resides on the church premises with his wife and 11-year-old daughter. His wife works at a private hospital. The police said that between August 13 and 16, Kurien sent the caretaker outstation for some work. The caretaker’s wife was away at the hospital. Their daughter was alone at home. Taking the advantage of the situation, Kurien went to the caretaker’s house and offered some eatables to the girl which she accepted, little doubting his ill intentions. Then Kurien did some indecent acts with her, prompting the panic-stricken girl to shout for help. Kurien immediately left the place. When her father, George returned, the girl narrated the story. For two days the caretaker and his wife were confused and terrified. Later, they decided to lodge a police complaint. However, it was said that the police took no action. The father of the daughter later took up the issue with the church management. The church secretary, SK Joseph John, lodged a complaint against the priest with the Gittikhadan police. The church authorities also set up an inquiry committee to probe into the matter. Investigation officer CM Bahadure said, “We have booked the accused priest for criminal force to minor with an intention to outrage her modesty under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code. He is absconding and we have launched a manhunt to track him.” |
