THE Vatican has rejected claims by Irish prime minister Enda Kenny that it tried to frustrate a child abuse inquiry, insisting his accusations were unfounded.
In its formal response to the Irish government in the wake of the damning findings of abuse allegations in Cloyne, County Cork, the Holy See denied it had hampered the inquiry.
The Vatican also said Mr Kenny had made no attempt to substantiate the accusation.
In July, Mr Kenny accused the Vatican of playing down the rape and torture of Irish children by clerical sex abusers.
He said that the Cloyne inquiry into abuse exposed "a dysfunctional, elite hierarchy determined to frustrate investigations".
