Victim's Advocate: Released Names of Accused Priests Only 'Partial List' By Bob Oakes WBUR August 26, 2011 http://www.wbur.org/2011/08/26/clergy-abuse-2 [with audio] BOSTON — There have already been strong reactions to the announcement made Thursday afternoon that the Boston Catholic Archdiocese would release the names of 159 priests who worked within the diocese and were accused of child sexual abuse. Vicar General Father Richard Erikson, the No. 2 archdiocese authority behind Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley, said the names were released to help shed light on a dark chapter in the church's history. "We make this announcement with great contrition and sorrow over the harm that has come to children and to minors, and we hope and we pray and we work diligently that these horrors and crimes and these sins will not happen again in the church." But criticism of the archdiocese by victim advocates over the limited contents of the list and the manner and timing of its release was immediate. Anne Barrett Doyle, co-director of the website Bishopaccountability.org, which she describes as a clergy sexual abuse watchdog and information gathering site, joined Morning Edition Friday with her reaction to the list. |
