Many dioceses that have settled with victims want you to believe they are under financial pressure. It is easy to forget how vast the church's land holdings are, and how easily it can turn those into cash. The church is selling the property to help pay the settlement from a series of priest sexual abuse cases. Townspeople will vote Oct. 4 whether to buy the property for $4.5 million. On Tuesday, the town sponsored a barbecue at the site to let people see what could become town property. Katie Leary tells the Burlington Free Press (http://bit.ly/qWaTpF ) she'll vote yes. She says she wants to see a family-friendly park on the lake. But Brian McCarter says his taxes are already too high. He says it's not the right time for the town to invest in land.
