A former consultant to the US bishops was the keynote speaker at a conference organized by a group that is lobbying for decriminalization of pedophilia.

Dr. Fred Berlin of Johns Hopkins University spoke to a meeting organized by a group called B4U-ACT. The conference was designed to explore ways in which "minor-attracted persons" could lobby for broader acceptance of their activities.

B4U-ACT is pressing for the American Psychiatric Association (APA) to drop pedophilia from its list of recognized disorders--just as the APA dropped homosexuality from the list of mental disorders a generation ago.

Fred Berlin was for years a consultant to the US bishops in their attempts to develop policies for handling complaints of sexual abuse by Catholic priests. Archbishop Rembert Weakland has testified that in 1985, Berlin strongly argued against removing abusive priests from public ministry.
