A Scarborough religious leader faces 13 charges in a sexual assault investigation.
Police said Mohammad Masroor, 48, imam of the Baitul Mukarram Islamic Society at 3334 Danforth Ave., was arrested Aug. 10.
"He has taught at this location and at private homes within the community since 2008," Det. Const. Karen Armstrong said during a news conference at police headquarters Wednesday. "Currently our investigation revolves around five victims who are both male and female."
Police alleged the offences occurred between Nov. 1, 2008 and July 28, 2011.
Police believe Masroor had lived and worked world-wide, including in Bangladesh, France, Germany, Hungary, Singapore, Sri Lanka and most recently in Florida and Michigan. He has been in Toronto since 2008.
"Mohammad Masroor is a person who is seen as a leader in the community and in a position of trust," Armstrong said. "We are utilizing the knowledge of our officers of the Islamic religion to further support all the victims in this investigation."
Armstrong, of the 41 Division youth and family violence unit, alleged the accused is known to the victims. She wouldn't disclose the ages of the victims.
The investigation began about three weeks ago.
