The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child has been waiting since 1997 for a report from the Vatican that explains its alleged role in covering up child and adolescent abuse committed by Catholic clergy. The report has now been promised for September or October. Critics of Vatican policy are waiting to see how robustly the Church plans to deal with the problem and whether it will answer Catholic anger and public disapproval following revelations of the abuses around the world.

The Vatican's attempts to right the wrongs have been criticized as lacking by Amnesty International and other organizations.

The Church is reported to be tripling resources to fight the problem. In May, the Vatican told bishops to make fighting sexual abuse of minors a priority and to cooperate with the authorities.
