It's been almost a full decade since Cardinal O'Malley and his colleagues pledged to be "open and transparent" about pedophile priests. It's been nearly 2.5 years since O'Malley promised to disclose the names of child molesting clerics. Yet still we keep learning about predators from other sources- despite O'Malley, instead of from O'Malley. If ever there's an archdiocese that should have 'come clean' with the identities of sex offender staff, it would be Boston. It speaks volumes that even in the original 'epicenter' of this continuing crisis, the top Catholic official is still being secretive and reckless. Meanwhile, the group BishopAccountability.org on Thursday urged the head of a powerful lay advisory committee, the archdiocese's review board, to pressure O'Malley to act. In March 2009, O'Malley wrote he was considering improving policy on releasing information about accused clergy. The archdiocese said Thursday it's made "substantial progress" on what it called an "important undertaking," but did not indicate when the list might be released Clergy sex abuse victims say the public airing of an alleged abuser's name is a vital step toward healing.
