The Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald says it is vital the Vatican give their response to the findings of the Cloyne Report as soon as possible.
The report found there were serious shortcomings on the part of the former Bishop John Magee and the Vatican itself in dealing with child sexual abuse allegations in the Cork diocese.
Earlier this week in an unprecedented move the Vatican recalled the Irish Papal Nuncio Guiseppe Leanza to Rome.
But it has yet to give its reaction to the findings of the Cloyne Report.
Speaking in Dublin this morning Minister Fitzgerald says we need to find out why the child protection guidelines were not followed.
