The trial of a former priest charged with sexually abusing a child in his congregation more than three decades ago will likely be delayed this morning.

Former Catholic priest William Casey may not be a free man again for several years. Sullivan County Criminal Court Judge Robert Montgomery denied Casey’s request for bond Thursday.

The judge’s decision came just eight days after a jury found the 77 year old Greene County man guilty of first degree criminal sexual conduct and aggravated rape. The crimes, which date back more than 30 years, involved a teenage boy.

Since the former priest will likely not be eligible for probation, District Attorney Barry Staubus told the judge Casey could be considered “a flight risk.”

Casey will remain behind bars until his sentencing hearing on August 22 and probably even longer. According to Staubus, each aggravated rape count carries a minimum 15-year sentence and the sexual conduct count carries a minimum jail term of 10 years.

Casey’s attorney Rick Spivey says he is still considering appealing the conviction and bond revocation.

The former priest is set to go to trial in Scott County, Virginia, in September for similar charges involving the same victim.
