The Boston Archdiocese on Tuesday announced that a former Brockton priest, William M. Walsh, has been defrocked at his own request.

He may no longer function in any capacity as a priest, except to offer last rites.

Ordained in 1971, Walsh has been on an administrative leave since 2004. He was removed from active ministry after allegations were made that he sexually abused a minor in the early 1970’s.

In 2001 the archdiocese received two letters stating that Walsh had sexually abused boys while assigned to St. Edward's Church in Brockton, where he worked from 1987 through 1997. At the time the church had a parochia school.

The letters were signed by "one of Father Bill's Golden Boys," who said the term referred to boys he molested.

Walsh was also assigned to Blessed Sacrament in Jamaica Plain, St. Joseph's in Hyde Park and St. Mary of the Annunciation in Danvers.
