This latest report says the diocese of Cloyne continued to conceal sex abuse of minors even after rules were made in the 1990's to protect them. The report also singles out the former Bishop John Magee for his failure to implement new procedures concerning child abuse, saying he “took little or no active interest.” It also notes the Vatican's role in helping Irish Bishops was “entirely unhelpful”. Magee issued an apology after the release of the report and said he hoped for a “new beginning.” When news of this story first came to light, the Pope relieved Magee of his position in 2009. The study reveals that there were 15 cases of abuse between 1996 and 2005 that should have been reported to the police, but only six were ever brought forward. The Irish government is now debating whether to summon the papal nuncio who serves as the Pope's representative in Ireland.
