The terms of an inquiry into historic institutional abuse in Northern Ireland will be announced in the autumn.

Stormont ministers said they will explore a series of options and formats over the summer recess after receiving a report compiled by the Interdepartmental Taskforce on Historical Institutional Abuse.

The report of the taskforce, which was set up last December to examine how an inquiry would proceed, was presented at the last executive meeting on Thursday morning.

The taskforce held talks with abuse victims and liaise with all nine Stormont departments in order to establish what the terms of the inquiry should be.

Last year, First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness made a commitment that the report would be delivered by the summer recess.

They also promised that victims and survivors would be kept closely informed of progress and have an opportunity to shape the outcome.

A spokesman said a wide-ranging discussion on the issue was held at the executive meeting.

"Ministers will now consider over the summer all the issues and options set out in the report and their implications, with a view to taking final decisions on the nature of the inquiry into these issues early in the autumn," he said.

Mr Robinson and Mr McGuinness have asked Junior Ministers Martina Anderson and Jonathan Bell to contact groups and individuals affected to discuss with them their views on the way forward.
